Legends Never Die: The Original Unofficial Juice WRLD Biography
Book to be Released by July 25th, 2023
Looking towards the future and what direction I want to take my career as a journalist, writer, and as a person, I wanted to start a transition to a new form of content by dedicating a considerable amount of dedication to something that both gives back and pays tribute to those who are no longer with us.
My goal is that by July, 2023, a full-length biography of Jarad Higgins, professionally known as Juice WRLD, “Legends Never Die” will be fully written and edited.
First, I wanted to write a little bit about the psychology behind the lettering, and overall style of the biography’s cover. The three components to the psychology I try to portray in the cover design are the actual background photo (Juice on an ATV,) the lettering (font choices+ text colors,) as well as the overall theme of the cover.
The main three components of the cover include the background photo, the lettering, and the overall theme. I wanted to portray some of the artistic brilliance of Juice in a way that attempts to match that brilliance.
Background Photo Choice
For the background photo, my main concern was ensuring I was maintaining a certain level of privacy of Juice as well as respect for the original photographers copyright rights. When I was looking for photos that matched both of these characteristics, my immediate thought was to check out Unsplash, where some generous photographers allow their work to be reused.
The unfortunate part of Unsplash is that really, there isn’t many photos of specific people or celebrities. Photos of celebrities are usually done by highly-monetized photography firms not looking to help smaller, independent artists. There were only two photographers who had been kind enough to upload their photos to Unsplash.
I am going to mention the first photographer, Joel because he’s the photographer of the picture I actually ended up using for the book cover. Joel Muniz, the owner of Infrared LA, had uploaded 6 photos of Juice to Unsplash. All the of the unique photos seemed to be from the same shoot, yet each maintained a different feel than each other.
Although all of Joel’s photos were shot to be unique and beautiful in their own way, I found that these four of the photos best portrayed the overall feel of the cover that I was looking for. The photo featuring Ally and Juice gave me the wrong vibe almost immediately:
This photo was problematic for the cover of the book for two main reasons; the lighting and the foreground subject matter. The lighting is pretty straight forward; I didn’t want to allow a book that is a story of the positivity Juice spread to throw off the readers’ initial feelings before even reading the book and understanding everything. Secondly, the foreground subject matter is that of Juice and Ally Lotti, his long-time girlfriend. Although there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with Lotti being in the photo (pending review,) I wanted to make the focus of the cover match the focus of the book. The focus of the book is Juice WRLD, not the relationship that Jarad and Ally had in their personal lives.
In the future process of writing the book, I will investigate the connections between Ally’s involvement with Juice and his mental health over the timeline of their relationship. However, I want to be totally transparent; I am not trying to make Ally look good or bad, I simply want to investigate the situation a little bit, because I believe their relationship was completely misunderstood by Juice’s fan base.
